A presentation and discussion took place on SB75 at our last lodge Regular Business Meeting 1/4/18. We have been awaiting an update and further direction from our State FOP regarding any efforts on this leglislation.
Key points of the bill (as proposed):
"Reduced from 52 to 50 the age at which a member of the 1977 police officers' and firefighters' pension and disability fund (1977 fund) is eligible to receive an unreduced retirement benefit. Eliminates early retirement with a reduced retirement benefit. Increases from 1% to 1.5% the amount of the additional retirement benefit payable to a 1977 fund member for each six months of active service over 20 years. Reduces from 32 to 28 the maximum number of years of service that may be used to compute a retirement benefit for a 1977 fund member."
This proposal has no effect on DROP.
Our collective FOP team has advocated for this proposal and has monitored its progress in the newly opened session. As with any legislative session, it is a long process and is extremely difficult to predict the viability of any proposal.
Therefore, it is important to speak with one voice and allows our FOP representatives to do their work. They have kept us posted. If and when anything specific is needed from our lodge membership moving forward, specific information and direction will be provided by our local lodge President.
Since our January Regular Business Meeting, the bill did recieve a hearing in committee. Leo Blackwell testified in favor of the Bill on behalf of our State FOP on Wednesday 1/17/18.
The Committee Chair has now assigned the proposal to a Summer Study Committee and no final action is expected on SB75 in this session.
Indiana State FOP President Owensby has now issued a letter; cllick here to read it.
If any Indianapolis FOP members have any additional questions, please contact Lodge #86 President, Rick Snyder.
