On Sunday (2/27/2022) an IMPD Officer was shot in the line of duty and critically injured. Subsequent to this incident, a suspect was publicly identified for his alleged involvement in this incident. On Wednesday (3/2/2022), local media (Fox59) reported the suspect was placed under arrest for warrants related to theft and resisting law enforcement, along with a warrant for a parole violation from a conviction for robbery and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
Public records indicated this suspect’s criminal history revealed that he had been arrested on January 31, 2022 and charged with Theft, a level 6 felony, and two counts of resisting law enforcement, a level 6 felony and class A misdemeanor. Documents also showed the suspect was released on February 1, 2022 on a $500 cash bond for the above criminal allegations.
The report also showed the suspect was release in February 2021 from DOC and assigned to the Indianapolis Parole District and had been marked delinquent as of January 19, 2022 – just days before his January 31, 2022 arrest and subsequent release as outlined above.
Last Thursday (3/3/2022), our Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police made a public call for you as the Marion County Prosecutor to publicly provide:
- A timeline and accounting of the alleged suspect’s prior criminal history;
- The status of the suspect as a Parolee;
- The reason/rationale as to why the suspect was given a low $500 cash bond as an alleged Repeat Offender;
- Documentation of what your office did to object on the record to such a bond and connect the dots of how such a quick release could have occurred.
As of today, (3/7/2022) we have not received or been made aware of any public response by you. Therefore, on behalf of our collective membership, I am making a formal written (and another public) request of you seeking your response to the listed points of concern. At the same time, I am calling upon the citizens of Marion County to join me in this request.
